Product Engineer

Maxence Fromentin

I build things people actually want to use

About

At Rakuten, I spent six months on one question: why do first-time buyers not come back? The answer wasn't a missing feature. Cashback already existed — customers just waited up to 45 days to get it, and most never realized they were earning it at all. I made it land instantly, the moment the package hits the mailbox, and put the balance in the site header where people actually decide. Three months later: +10% repurchase rate.

That's the pattern I keep coming back to — the build matters, but so does whether anyone understands it. I write the code, design the system, and ask whether we should ship it at all. IRIS runs a 0.5B LLM fully on-device because I wanted zero data leaving the machine, which meant actually learning tokenization and quantization instead of calling an API. My irrigation system reads 15 soil sensors off a Raspberry Pi. My homelab runs Home Assistant, n8n, a NAS, and WireGuard, and I maintain all of it.

Graduated from ECE Paris in 2026 (Product Engineering & Innovation), with semesters in Malta and Taiwan along the way. Now looking for an AI engineer role in Japan — not a vague preference: two years of daily Japanese study, targeting JLPT N3, available to start.

Projects

A mix of AI, IoT, infrastructure, and game dev — things I built because I was curious.

Japan App

In progress

Full-stack Japanese learning platform: React 19 + Vite front end, FastAPI back end, and Supabase Postgres with row-level security. Vocabulary and grammar drills are generated by Mistral AI, with a local Ollama model kept as a fallback.

Gen AI Chatbot

Privacy-first local AI assistant powered by a 0.5B LLM — no external APIs, all inference runs on-device ensuring zero data leaves the machine.
